Worked examples

Example readings. The people are invented and the cards were chosen to teach.

The Magician upright at work

Lena, invented. Keywords blended: skill, resources, action.

I keep saying I need one more certification before I apply for the senior role.

Reader: Four tools lie on his table and he never goes to fetch a fifth. That is the picture. Resources and skill are the card's words, and the thing people miss is that nothing on the card is missing. Action is the third word: the wand is already raised. The card describes someone who has what is needed and whose open question is the use.

Lena: So the certification is an excuse.

Reader: The card does not know your field. It shows a table where everything is present. List what is on your table today, out loud. Then say whether the gap is real or whether it is the fifth tool. Which is it?

The Magician reversed with money

Andre, invented. Keywords blended: scattered, empty talk, against the upright resources.

I earn well and I have nothing to show for it.

Reader: Reversed, the Magician's tools are scattered; that is the word itself. Upright, a thin trail of light runs from the raised hand through the body to the finger pointing at the ground: what comes in reaches the ground. Reversed, the trail is broken somewhere, so what comes in never lands. 'Nothing to show' is the reversed card in your own words. The card's question is where the trail breaks: between earning and deciding, or between deciding and doing.

Andre: Deciding. I never decide.

Reader: Then the first tool to pick up is the hand that points down. One decision, one small thing that reaches the ground this month. Which one?

The Magician upright in love and relationships

Sofia, invented. Keywords blended: communication, will, the reversed shadow, empty talk.

My partner and I talk past each other. Every conversation turns into a pitch.

Reader: Communication is this card's word. But look at the hands. One gesture each. No speech. Will on this card is a direction, not a volume. The reversed shadow, empty talk, is what a pitch becomes when the will is to win rather than to be understood.

Sofia: So, less talking.

Reader: Fewer words, one gesture. What is the one thing you want them to understand, and what is the plainest way to show it rather than argue it?

The Magician upright for yourself

Jamal, invented. Keywords blended: will, skill, action.

I have ten ideas and I start all of them.

Reader: The card is will turned into action, and the first move is attention. William James's line sits under this card: experience is what you agree to attend to. Before the hand moves, something chooses what to notice. Ten ideas is ten tables. The Magician has one. Skill on this card is not talent. It is the choice of one tool.

Jamal: Which one?

Reader: The card does not pick for you. Which of the ten would you most regret leaving on the table a year from now? Start there, and let the other nine wait their turn. Which one is it?

Letter, Tree of Life and sky

These are the fixed links every card carries. A Major Arcana card has a Hebrew letter and a path on the Tree of Life, the Kabbalah diagram of ten spheres joined by twenty-two paths. A Minor card has an element and a place in the Tree's scheme: one of its ten spheres, or for a court card one of its four worlds. Every card also has a sky: a planet, a sign or an element. These links connect the card to astrology and to Kabbalah, and most of them come from the Golden Dawn's tables, as this deck's card system records them.
